About Communities Building Youth Futures

The Alberni Clayoquot Health Network has partnered with Tamarack Institute and the Government of Canada on a pan-Canadian project to develop system wide solutions for youth as they build and act upon plans for their future. Communities Building Youth Futures is a multi year initiative working for youth across Canada. This project has youth voice (approximately ages 15-30) at the centre of decision making and capacity building. CBYF Alberni Clayoquot initiatives will prioritize:

  • Increased belonging and support
  • Transitions (into, during, and after high school)
  • Harm reduction
  • Mental health
  • Connection to the land and culture

What we have done, where we are going

Setting the Stage

To initiate Communities Building Youth Futures in the Alberni Clayoquot Region we reached out to youth and youth workers in the region to introduce the program and identify the priorities. From our engagement we learned that mental health, harm reduction, connection and belonging and connection to land and culture were prevalent themes. Also that youth programs faced capacity challenges, in order to address this feedback our first steps were to:
– Hired youth facilitators to engage throughout our region, bring up the youth voice and increase capacity for youth and youth programs to address priorities.
– Launched one time capacity grants to ensure valuable youth programs had the capacity to flourish
– Our youth facilitators have been active in the Alberni Valley, West Coast and Barkley communities supporting youth programs, building capacity and bringing forward youth voice to inform our next steps.

Youth Survey

Our youth workers are engaging youth in person and online – we want to know what is important to youth and how we should address the priorities identified in our region. One way we plan to do this is through the CBYF Youth Survey.
If you are a youth in the Alberni Clayoquot we want to hear from you!

Alberni Clayoquot Plan on a Page

Part of our work with Tamarack Institute is to develop a plan on a page to communicate our priorities and combine our efforts with CBYF initiatives across Canada. In collaboration with youth across the region and youth workers, the following data points, priorities and critical shifts were identified to move CBYF Alberni Clayoquot forward.
